Designed by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, Les Arcades du Lac was built between 1978 and 1982 in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, southwest of Paris. Combining monumental arcades, classical proportions and geometric compositions, the residential complex is a distinctive example of postmodern architecture. Its buildings frame a series of courtyards and extend across an artificial lake, creating an architectural landscape of remarkable scale and symmetry.
Beyond its monumental presence, the place possesses a unique sense of tranquillity. There is a meditative quality to its spaces, where architecture, water and light come together in a rare harmony. Shortly before sunset, for a brief fifteen-minute window, the light takes on a soft, almost pink hue, spreading across the façades and transforming the entire complex. For a fleeting moment, the place becomes something magical — an experience that is as much about atmosphere as it is about architecture. These photographs capture the transition from the soft light of dusk to that almost surreal moment.
